Refine Siheyuan by B.L.U.E. Architecture Studio
Hutong is a type of narrow street or alley between the historical type of residence called “Siheyuan” in northern Chinese cities, especially Beijing. Siheyuan is a courtyard surrounded by small houses on all four sides. It is one of the most special national culture heritages for Northen Chinese because it contains history, culture, and livelihood for most young and old generations. In Beijing, Hutong is still everywhere in the old town area, but many young people started moving out because outside the modern world is more appealing to them.
B.L.U.E. Architecture Studio, located in Chaoyang District, Beijing took this very interesting project, redefine a Siheyuan in the old town area to enable modern exterior and interior features, yet keeping the historic architectural form so that the young generation might be returning to this historical place. At the same time, the cultural heritage will be preserved as well.
Repolishing wooden structures that were composed with aged stone and combine them with new glass, is what makes this project outstanding. The old paint on the wood was stripped off so that the original wood color can be shown, and well contrasted with the grayish stone and clear glass. Looking at the antiqued wooden structure under dim yellow lighting gives a cozy warm mood.
Concrete and brownish wood are two of the most common elements inside the house. Clean surface and raw finishing make the overall interior contemporary and elegant. Some of the wooden pieces of furniture are built-in designs like cabinets, sofa, and desks. The unified color makes the interior look consistent and well-organized.
