Meditation 2 by Bae Se-hwa
Meditation 2 is the10th piece of the Steam Series. It is a piece of sculptural seating furniture created with bent walnut by Bae Se-hwa, a South Korean artist famous for working with steam bent walnut wood to create fluid and elegant curves in sculptural furniture. His inspiration comes from organic silhouettes of a mountain, a stream or a river of Korea, interpretation of beauty and the harmony of nature.
He has been strongly intrigued by the form and function of ‘BANDAJI’ from Joseon Dynasty, a cedar chest for storing books, clothes, and vessels, which has half of one side hinged. Regarded as a representative object of Korean sentiment, linear and simple shaped ‘BANDAJI’ has versatility and flexibility in its use. Meditation 2 is relatively simpler than other pieces in the series. The shape is more modern and it only has the curve lines in the middle. It could be a functional home bench. The woodworking process could be an inspiration to the fellow furniture designer.
