Bentwood Cup Sleeve by Tomoya Nasuda
The bentwood cup sleeve is created with “Magemono“, a woodwork technique that has been in use in Japan since ancient times. The sleeve is an upgrade from Haori Cup‘s bentwood sleeve designed by Tomoya Nasuda, who loves coffee and like to invite friends for coffee parties.
Magemono is also a generic name for containers made using thin sheets of wood such as Japanese cedar, cypress, and fir, which are bent and fastened into circular and polygonal forms.
In the Edo period, the Magemono technique mostly used to craft bento boxes, rice containers, trays, cake boxes, flower stands, and tea ceremony items. In the present, it is mainly a technique of crafting bento boxes which have been preserved.
The bentwood has this rich wood grain and minimal look. It is a feast for the eyes and feels solid and secure, and very pleasing to the touch. Moreover, it can replace paper coffee sleeves.
