Cane Sofa by Atelier 2+
Cane Sofa is one of the furniture prices made with ash wood and rattan in the Cane Collection, designed by Atelier 2+, a Bangkok based creative studio with international recognition in architecture, art, craft and design.
Caning is one of the most ancient furniture making techniques, appeared thousands of years before popularised during the Victorian height of the British Empire. There are many different types of caning using different materials such as wicker, rattan, willow, reed, and bamboo. Most of the techniques were first started practising in East Asia because those plants were massively distributed in the area. It was very popular and extensively used through the 1700-1800s and on into the early 1900s until plastic was invented and soon used in the furniture industry. However, it is recently popular in the deco trends again and gives expression to a strong sense of place while showcasing elegance and comfort simultaneously.
Caned surface allows light and air to flow through the furniture while casting finely patterned shade across the furnished space. It is soft and comfortable. The collection aims to insert the still beauty of contemporarily decorated space with a warm light that radiates life and vibrancy. The unique airiness of caned surface works as a conduit of light and air, allowing these elements freedom of movement not found through other types of furniture surface material.
